Determining Child Support in Riverside
Both parents in Illinois are financially responsible for providing for their children. If a parent has primary physical custody of a child, then it is assumed they are meeting this obligation. As such, the non-custodial parent will be ordered by the court to make child support payments. The state of Illinois uses the income-shares model to determine the child support obligations of each parent.
The income-shares model considers the adjusted net income of both parents collectively. Based on parents’ combined income and the number of children supported, the amount of child support owed is determined. The total amount of support owed will be divided amongst the parents proportional to each parent’s income. For example, if parents owe a collective $500 per month in child support payments and the non-custodial parent is responsible for 75 percent of the parent’s combined monthly net income, then the non-custodial parent will be responsible for 75 percent of the $500, or $375.
